Is ATB a good thermal storage technology?
ATB is considered as a promising technology of thermal storage with prominent advantages. ATB has expectedly higher energy storage density than LTS, because the adsorption heat of adsorbents (2,000–4,000 kJ/kg) is much larger than the latent heat of PCMs (100–280 kJ/kg).
What is the thermal energy of passive ATB systems?
The thermal en-ergy storage density is estimated to be 200–300 kWh/m3, and the thermal efficiency of the passive ATB systems is calculated to be in the range of 0.65–0.95. Such a pas-sive ATB system is expected to have outstanding potential and wide application in distributed building heating, especially in remote and off-gird areas.
How does the ATB system work?
The ATB system implements a thermal charging and discharging process based on the reversible reactions between the adsorbent and adsorbate. When heat is used to drive a desorption process (the separation of adsorbate from adsorbent), thermal energy is stored in the form of adsorption potential energy.
What is ATB technology?
With the ability of rechargeable and use-on-demand function, ATB technology resembles a thermal battery, in which heat is stored when it is not needed, and is allowed to be transported and released on users’ demand .
What is an open ATB system?
Ambient conditions of open systems Distinct from the isolated closed system, an open ATB system captures moisture as a source of energy directly from the ambient environment and the released adsorption heat is used to heat up the air.
Can ATB reduce energy consumption during thermal storage & release?
Inspired by the solar-driven chimney effect of Trombe wall, we propose a novel pas-sive ATB concept that can significantly reduce the power consumption of ventilation during thermal storage and release and, moreover, provide cooperative and customized regulations on indoor temperature and humidity.
