What is a super grid?
One conceptual plan of a super grid linking renewable sources across North Africa, the Middle East and Europe. (DESERTEC) [citation needed] A super grid or supergrid is a wide-area transmission network, generally trans-continental or multinational, that is intended to make possible the trade of high volumes of electricity across great distances.
What is a 765 kV super grid?
Although flexible alternating current transmission systems (FACTS) have drawbacks for long distances, American Electric Power has championed a 765 kV super grid they call I-765 that would provide 400 GW of extra transmission capacity required for producing 20% of US energy from wind farms based in the midwest. (See figure above).
Is a super-grid a viable solution based on 100% renewables?
With the advent of new transmission technology (see below), and the growth of renewable energy, collective expectations and beliefs about the Super-grid as the only technologically and economically viable solution for a future system based on 100% renewables spread within the transmission industry .
Could a supergrid be implemented in the European power system?
In case the supergrid would be implemented in the current European power system, this would result in an unprecedented need for coordination between the operator of the DC grid and all connected TSOs. Of course, in case a single European TSO could be set up, these problems could be minimized.
Why is a super grid superior to a mega grid?
In the second sense of an advanced grid, the super grid is superior not only because it is a wide area mega grid, but also because it is highly coordinated from a macro level spanning nations and continents, all the way down to the micro-level scheduling low priority loads like water heaters and refrigeration.
What is a global supergrid?
The extreme case of “supergrid” is “global grid” which connects all continents. The concept of a supergrid dates back to the 1950s. However, interest in such grids has been accelerated recently in the context of monetizing stranded renewable energy resources through transnational export. Fig. 2 illustrates potential options for global supergrids.
